Kittens are young pet cats that can follow the player. In order to obtain a pet kitten, a player must complete the Gertrude's Cat quest, after which Gertrude will give them a kitten as part of the reward. The first kitten is free, and each kitten after that is 100 coins, but players cannot own more than one kitten at a time. If a fully grown cat is put into the player-owned house Menagerie, another kitten can be obtained from Gertrude. If players have an activated ring of charos, they are able to charm Gertrude into allowing them to choose a specific colour kitten. Otherwise, players will be given a kitten of a random colour.

A kitten can catch rats via the Chase Vermin option in its Interact menu, which has a success rate of 10%. Any colour of kitten can be turned into a generic Hell-kitten by chasing the hell-rats in Evil Dave's basement, or morphed back into its original colour by feeding it a bucket of milk.

Kittens may be spoken to with a Catspeak amulet. The responses are noticeably more child-like than grown cats, and Hell-kittens' responses are more devilish. The kitten's responses are chosen from a random list of phrases, unless they are very hungry or lonely, in which case their dialogue will reflect this. After Icthlarin's Little Helper, an extra dialogue option is added which allows the player to review some events of the quest.

If you attempt to cast Low Level Alchemy or High Level Alchemy on a Kitten in your inventory, the Game chatbox will read "You can't do that to a defenceless kitten!" and the spell will not cast.

Players can also shoo away their kitten from the Interact menu using the Shoo-away option.

Combat stats [edit | edit source]

When fighting Hell-Rat Behemoths, the King rat or in the Rat Pits, kittens have the following combat stats:[1]

Hitpoints Hitpoints Attack Attack Strength Strength Defence Defence
4 1 1 0

Caring for a kitten [edit | edit source]

Unlike other pets, kittens grow and will need to be fed and interacted with while out in the world (not in item form in the bank or inventory). Additionally, they cannot be stored in pet houses.

Hunger [edit | edit source]

24 minutes after the kitten is last fed, the player is warned that the kitten is hungry. If the kitten is not fed after 3 minutes, the player gets a second warning indicating it is very hungry ("Meeeooowww!"). If then it is not fed within the next 3 minutes, the kitten will run away. Every time the kitten is fed, the timer resets to 24 minutes.

Any raw or cooked fish that is not exclusively caught from Barbarian fishing, Aerial fishing, or the Ruins of Camdozaal can be used to feed a kitten. Fish from Barbarian fishing may be gutted with a knife, and the resulting caviar or roe may be fed to the kitten, though fish offcuts or fish chunks from aerial fishing can not. Players often use cheap fish such as raw sardines or the stackable raw karambwanji for extended trips. Frog spawn may also be used to feed a kitten.

Attention [edit | edit source]

A fresh kitten can go without attention for 25 minutes before it warns the player that it needs attention. If its needs are not met after 7 minutes, the kitten will cry out it's feeling lonely ("Meeeooowww..."). Finally, if its cries for attention are not heard in another 7 minutes, the kitten runs away.

The kitten can be stroked, fulfilling its need for attention for 18 minutes before another warning is issued. When stroked more than once, the kitten is satiated and won't complain for another 25 minutes, instead of the 18 minutes for a single stroke. This can be done by right-clicking the cat and selecting Interact and choosing Stroke. ( Chat 1)

The player may also use a ball of wool on the kitten to play with it, making it not ask for attention for 51 minutes. This will not use up the ball of wool, which will stay in the player's inventory.

Growth [edit | edit source]

After three hours of following the player, their kitten will grow into an adult cat, which no longer needs food or attention. You can check the amount of time that you still have to care for your kitten by right clicking on it and selecting the interact button. Then you can choose the third option 'guess age'.

Trivia [edit | edit source]

  • If players attempt to feed a kitten just before it would otherwise die of starvation, they will get a message saying "Your cat doesn't seem to be in the mood for a snack." in their chat box, before the cat passing away ("Your cat has passed away.").
